“The Long Tail,” “Cloud Computing,” and “Social Media”

 How has “The Long Tail,” “Cloud Computing,” and “Social Media” influenced your life? I grew up during the “discovery” of The Long Tail . I was entering middle school in 2004, when Chris Anderson published his long tail article on Wired . As a late millennial in a relatively tech savvy household, I was introduced to niche genres from an early age; my parents loved that they could get DVDs in the mail of the shows they grew up with. Then, we had high speed internet before many of our friends because my dad needed it for work, so we got Netflix’s streaming service as soon as it was available. Now I’m a mom, and streaming services are an integral part of my kids’ lives. It’s how we listen to music and watch shows and movies. They don’t hear their parents listening to talk radio, they hear podcasts. Advertising is different too; they don’t want toys because they see them on commercials, they don’t see commercials, they want toys because their favorite YouTube content creators have ...
